Sport games are either mental or physical activities, often of an interactive nature, played either for the purpose of increasing fitness, speed, skill, strength, stamina, or even fun. Competitions in sport activities frequently include elements of both physical fitness and mental strength. As physical fitness improves through exercise, the participant’s skills become more specialized and enhanced, resulting in a higher degree of success and enjoyment of the activity. In turn, this positive feedback cycle provides a source of motivation for participants in a sport activity, resulting in continued participation and a continued development of the participant’s skills.
Participating in a sport provides an opportunity to develop and improve one’s physical fitness through exercise. Many people perceive video games and computer games as having little or no physical fitness. In reality, most computer games, while requiring a great deal of hand-eye coordination, are still effective sources of exercise. Computer games allow the participant to use the entire body in a variety of movement patterns, increasing muscle strength and muscle power, while reducing the amount of time spent performing the same movements in traditional sports. Sports videos, by contrast, provide a much smaller focus on actual physical fitness, but still can be highly engaging and stimulating.
For the active adult, or the nonprofessional athlete, the importance of participating in sports is not lost. In the past, children were prevented from participating in organized sports due to high costs of equipment and training, due to public school rules that discouraged student participation in sports. Today, with the proper equipment and training, the cost of participation in organized sports is very reasonable and allows many students the opportunity to play sports for academic reasons, or to enter sports as a part of their extracurricular activity. In addition, the large number of athletic clubs and recreational sports in the United States provides many adults with the physical fitness and confidence necessary to compete in competitive sports.
However, there are many adults who play sports, but have trouble staying involved and competitive. Perhaps they are injured or suffering from a disability that limits their ability to participate in the same physical fitness activities they could otherwise enjoy. There are many individuals who choose to play a non-traditional sport due to their injury or illness, but cannot participate in organized sports due to the cost of equipment and training.
